Greece celebrated Independence Day on Friday with a military parade open to the public after two years of pandemic-related restrictions.

Hundreds of Greeks came to central Athens to watch members of Greece's military marching in formation and the tanks rolling down the street in front of Greece's Parliament.

In the skies, recently acquired French Rafale fighter jets flew over the Greek capital.

"The anniversary of our independence, which we honoured with today's parade, reminds us that nations put themselves on the map by having faith in their strengths, unity and passion for freedom," said Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Greece's War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire began in 1821.

"We are against revisionism, wherever it may come from, and we are in favour of each country's territorial sovereignty and independence," said Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos.
