For the past 100 years, our two most well-known glaciers - Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere/Franz Josef Glacier and Te Moeka o Tūawe/Fox Glacier - have been the jewels in our tourism crown. These glaciers are unique as very few worldwide are as close to the ocean or as easily accessible.

But for the past decade, our iconic glaciers have been melting at an alarming rate to the point where the only way to get to them is by helicopter. Why are they retreating so rapidly? And what does that mean for all of us?
