Cardinal Angelo Becciu, along with nine others, is going on trial, accused of extortion, embezzlement and money laundering.
The Vatican’s justice system has been reformed by Pope Francis, and this trial is the first to see a cardinal indicted by criminal prosecutors instead of other churchmen.
Becciu, who had once considered becoming a candidate for the Papacy, denies all charges and says he is the victim of a Vatican conspiracy
