Climate activist Greta Thunberg visited the abandoned village of Luetzerath in western Germany where demonstrators are protesting the expansion of an open coal mine.
Following a court decision allowing energy firm RWE to proceed with the expansion, police in riot gear moved in to clear barricades put up by activists, some of who have been occupying the village for over two years.
"The science is clear, we need to keep the carbon in the ground... Germany is really embarrassing itself right now," Thunberg said regarding the eviction order.
Meanwhile, several climate activists retreated to underground tunnels to evade eviction.
