The race to elect Germany's next leader has seen surprising gains by the opposition Greens party, ahead of September's election.
In some regions, the Greens are polling higher than the governing Christian Democrats, the party of outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is stepping down from the forefront of international politics after 16 years.
