Germany elections: Narrow win for Social Democrats

There are no resounding winners in yesterday's German election, but there were some clear losers. Without her at the helm, the CDU of Angela Merkel scored the worst result since its foundation after the Second World War. It will sully Angela Merkel's legacy, even if the party will try and cobble together a workable coalition.

The prize of last night goes to the Social Democrats of Olaf Scholz, who were only 1.5 percent ahead of their rival, but have a much stronger case and easier path to form a coalition with the Greens and the Free Democrats.

Because of the colours red, yellow and green, it's become known as the Traffic Light Coalition.
