Germany's Justice Ministry is working on the largest family law reform in decades, which would make it possible for friends, flatmates, neighbors and other platonic partners to take on legal responsibility for one another.
That means they would have the right to receive information about each other, for example when one is in the hospital, to represent each other in legal situations, and so on — rights that are currently reserved for spouses and some blood relatives.
