British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sat down with the Group of Seven world leaders at Cabris Bay in Cornwall, U.K. Friday to kick off a three-day summit, saying it was a chance to learn lessons from the coronavirus pandemic and ensure they do not repeat the same mistakes made during it, and together they can "build back better."

“We’ve all been going through the most wretched pandemic our countries have faced for our lifetimes, maybe longer, much longer. We need to make sure we learn the lessons from the pandemic, we need to make sure we don’t repeat some of the errors that we doubtless made in the course of the last 18 months or so. And we now need to make sure we allow our economies to recover,” Johnson said.

At the end of his welcoming remarks, Johnson said that the meeting was supposed to be a closed and informal fireside chat but that it had become a "gigantic media circus," and asked the media to leave.
