French police in Rouen shot dead an armed man who set fire to the city's synagogue, local officials said on Friday.

The suspect, who was carrying a knife and iron bar, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail and set fire to the building's interior, according to Rouen mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that the suspect was of Algerian origin. Darmanin praised a 25-year-old deputy police officer for his courageous and professional response and said, "I would like to congratulate him here and tell him that he will be decorated by the Republic for his support for the protection of places of worship and of individuals."
