Sir Richard Dearlove, the former chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), has said the Russian hacking, which according to the government has compromised the private conversations of high-profile politicians and civil servants, could have an impact on elections in the next year.

He said: "Well of course it will. I think we'll see evidence of meddling."

But he says the Russians don't necessarily have the capability to affect the election results directly and said that the UK has "formidable capabilities" and defences.
