Braden Herman's close friends, Rochele Herman and June Hanson, stood outside Prince Albert Court House on Thursday as former Saskatchewan RCMP officer Bernie Herman was escorted out in handcuffs.
Bernie Herman was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of his lover, Braden Herman. The two men are not related. Braden Herman’s naked body was found in 2021 in a park on the outskirts of Prince Albert, Sask. He had been shot in the chest.
The judge heard that the two men met on Facebook in 2018, and Braden Herman moved into the veteran officer’s family home. The relationship quickly became sexual and caused strain on the Mountie’s marriage. The officer’s wife kicked Braden Herman out of the home in 2019, but the sexual relationship between the men continued.
Justice Gary Meschishnick said he didn’t believe Bernie Herman’s testimony that he felt threatened by the younger man.
Hanson and Herman, who are also unrelated to both the victim and convicted officer, agreed that the charge of manslaughter seemed inappropriate. "You could tell it was premeditated just based on the facts that came out in court and manslaughter isn't enough," Hanson said. "Why did he leave that day with his gun and why did he pick up Braden if he was so afraid?"
