Former Nazi death-squad member Helmut Oberlander, who had been living in Waterloo, Ont., died this week in the midst of his Canadian deportation hearing to Germany, where he would have to answer for his crimes.

His family says the 97-year-old died peacefully in his home "surrounded by loved ones," but the family members of people who died in the Holocaust as well as survivors of the tragedy are frustrated that justice won't be served.

Oberlander worked as an interpreter for the Einsatzgruppen, a mobile killing squad, a fact he concealed from the Canadian government. Caryn Lieberman reports.
