The second congressional committee hearing investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol took place on Monday with a number of Trump administration officials either testifying in-person or via tape.
Among those who had their testimony played before the committee was former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr. Barr said during taped testimony that he recalled a meeting with former President Trump in December of 2020, where he was handed a report by the president who told him it was absolute proof of election fraud.
"It looked very amateurish to me. Didn't have the credentials of the people involved. I didn't see any real qualifications. And the statements were made very conclusory like - you know these machines were designed to engage in fraud or something to that effect, but I didn't see any supporting information for it. I was somewhat demoralized because I thought if he really believes this stuff he has lost contact with - he's become detached from reality," Barr said.
The hearing is the second of an expected six this month, in which the panel will discuss initial findings of its year-long investigation into the events of Jan. 6, when thousands of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol as then-vice-president Mike Pence and lawmakers met to certify Trump's defeat in the November 2020 election by Democrat Joe Biden.
Monday's session follows a blockbuster hearing on Thursday night, featuring testimony showing that close Trump allies — even his daughter Ivanka — rejected his false claims of voting fraud.
