Foreign Minister defends first visit to China in five years

Foreign secretary James Cleverly has defended talks with Chinese officials in Beijing today arguing it would be a mistake to isolate the UK’s fourth largest trading partner any further.

Mr Cleverly, the first senior British minister in five years to visit China, insisted his meeting with his counterpart Wang Yi was an opportunity to reset ties after years of tension.
In a statement the foreign office said Mr Cleverly had raised concerns surrounding human rights, Taiwan and Hong Kong. But some MPs say this approach to China as incoherent and weak.
