Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said search and rescue efforts were ongoing in Surfside, Fla. on Thursday after they responded in the early morning to a partially collapsed condo building in the community.

Assistant Chief Ray Jadallah said that the building, which has 136 units, saw its northeast corridor collapse, where there were approximately 55 units. They arrived at about 1:30 a.m. local time and began search efforts, pulling out 35 occupants who were trapped in the building. He said in addition to the 35, 10 others were assessed and treated and two were transported to hospital.

One resident, Barry Cohen, said he had been asleep when the collapse happened and thought it was a lightning storm, but when the banging continued for about 30 seconds he and his wife decided they needed to leave, only to open their apartment door and find a pile of "rubble and dust and just havoc."
