At least 31 people are dead and 15 are still missing in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province, following flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain on Saturday.
Approximately 46 locals were injured by the natural disasters, which also felled trees, blocked roadways and damaged homes, according to West Sumatra authorities.
Several survivors in the Agam Regency sought shelter in a nearby school classroom. One of them, 43-year-old Eko Widodo, recalled the “sudden” and “out-of-control” nature of the floods.
In its latest report, Indonesia’s national disaster management agency, BNPB, said the floods had covered much of the Tanah Datar Regency in mud and impacted five sub-districts. Additionally, 84 homes and 16 bridges were hit by the disasters.
