The extent of a fire on the Italian island of Sicily had flames stretching across the hills as authorities continued to battle fires in the country’s south.

Italy’s fire service said on Aug. 11 that it had carried out over 300 “interventions” in the previous 12 hours across Sicily and the region of Calabria.

Local media reported that some people had been forced to leave their homes amid the fires in Sicily.

Meanwhile, in the town of Petralia, Soprana, near Sicily's capital Palermo, forest fires have been active for days.

In video filmed by the fire brigade, fire fighters were extinguishing the blaze during the night as teams were deployed to protect homes near the flames.

The Sicilian regional government declared a state of emergency due to the wildfires on Aug. 6, to be in effect for six months.
