The recent oil spill off Peruvian coasts caused a significant crisis in the gastronomy, fishing and tourism sectors in Lima. Contamination of the city’s oldest Ancon resort’s waters made fishermen’s work impossible to do, consequently leading to economic problems. Reportedly 21 beaches around Lima were seriously damaged by the oil spill.
