U.S. First Lady Jill Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken hosted the annual International Women of Courage Awards on Wednesday, marking the first time the awards have taken place at the White House.

The awards are administered by the State Department and recognize "women from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, and the empowerment of women and girls, in all their diversity, and more, often at great personal risk and sacrifice," according to a statement from Biden's office.

“Girls everywhere need to know that there are women fighting for them, and winning — opening doors, transforming schools and communities and governments, building a better world for all of us,” Biden said as she prepared to honour this year’s recipients.

“And we’re also here to say to their brothers, and their fathers, and their husbands, and their friends: as much as we need women who are willing to speak up, we need more men who are willing to listen and act.”

The ceremony takes place on International Women's Day and has seen more than 180 women, from 80 countries, receive the award since it was established in 2007.
