February 17, 2022: Ukraine shelling, Brazil floods kill dozens, Sydney shark attack, Hong Kong COVID cases, Biden
1. Russian-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces traded accusations of firing shells across the ceasefire line in eastern Ukraine, and Kyiv said the incidents looked like a "provocation" at a time when Russia has troops massed on the frontier.
2, At least 94 people died in the historic Brazilian mountain town of Petropolis, local government officials said on Wednesday, after heavy rains caused mudslides that buried homes, flooded the streets and washed away cars and buses.
3. Several Sydney beaches, including the iconic Bondi and Bronte, were shut down after a swimmer was killed in a shark attack, the first such fatality at the city's beaches in nearly 60 years.
4. Hong Kong's coronavirus battle intensified as authorities reported that new cases had multiplied by 60 times so far this month and media reported that testing would become compulsory for everyone in the global financial hub from March.
5. U.S. President Joe Biden will visit Ohio to tout $1 billion in funding from the bipartisan infrastructure bill signed last November aimed at cleaning up and restoring environmentally damaged areas in the Great Lakes region.
