Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in history who maintained his power in the face of dramatic convulsions in the Republican Party for almost two decades, will step down from that position in November.

McConnell, who turned 82 last week, said "Father time remains undefeated," in an emotional statement before his colleagues in the Senate Wednesday.

"It's been an honour to work with each of you. There will be plenty of time to express my gratitude in greater detail as I sprint towards the finish line which is now in sight," he said.
