Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is set to give the Canadian government’s outlook for the economy and its own spending plans in the fall economic statement on Thursday, as inflation stays hot, interest rates rise and rumblings of recession grow louder.

The Trudeau government's fiscal update will focus on driving investment in Canada's clean energy industries in response to new American tax incentives signed into law in August in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Freeland's update will include a new tax on corporate stock buybacks to encourage companies to invest in their own operations. It will also introduce new or enhanced tax incentives to aid the growth of clean energy including hydrogen.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also set to attend.
