A tornado struck the city of Guangzhou in southern China, killing five people and injuring 33, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday, citing local authorities.

The tornado hit the city's Baiyun district on Saturday afternoon, adding it had damaged 141 factory buildings but no residential houses had collapsed, state news agency Xinhua said. Rescuers from the city's emergency management, weather, fire, waterworks and health departments, as well as local residents, were sent to the area, Xinhua said, adding that search and rescue work was completed there.

Plus, a heavy hailstorm lashed the city of Fuzhou in China's southern Jiangxi province on Sunday, while the northern part of Hebei province was blanketed in snow over the weekend. Hailstones the size of golf balls also battered farmlands and residential compounds in Guangdong.

China has been battling extreme weather in recent weeks, including record-breaking rains and extreme flooding.
