Every May, Europeans unite to cheer on their own, or favourite, countries in the historical Eurovision Song Contest. What is Eurovision? An international song competition organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which sees singers and musical acts from a host of countries vie for the number one spot. This year, however, the beloved event is shrouded in controversy.

As attendees gather in the Swedish city of Malmo for Saturday’s grand finale, Dutch fans have been left in the dark following accusations against Joost Klein — a fan favourite contestant from the Netherlands — that he threatened a female member of the show’s production crew.

Klein, 26, was expelled from performing on Friday, as an investigation began. Klein’s future in the contest remains unclear to fans and has left many upset and angered with the EBU.

The allegations come as political controversy surrounding Eurovision heats up as well, with protests taking place over Israel’s participation in the event, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
