The European Parliament stripped MEP Eva Kaili of her vice-presidential post amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption.

Kaili was one of four people arrested and charged in Belgium over allegations that World Cup host Qatar had bribed her to influence decision-making, charges she denies.
Qatar has also denied any wrongdoing.

Some EU Parliament lawmakers however raised concerns over the damage the scandal could have on the institution.

"I would say we cannot estimate in the moment the damage which was caused by (the) activities of single persons," Rainer Wieland, a German member of the European People's Party, said. "I think the only way to let trust grow again is to leave no doubts that the house stands in full clarity with the readiness of full support to the investigations of the public authorities are done in Belgium."

In Tuesday's vote, 625 MEPs voted in favour of the move, with only one against and two abstaining.
