European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to Ukrainian women in her message to Canada's Parliament on Tuesday, telling MPs that the women in that country “have smashed a glass ceiling right over the head of the Russian invaders.”

Speaking on the eve of International Women’s Day on Wednesday, von der Leyen said the number of women serving in the Ukrainian military has more than doubled. She added that “millions of Ukrainian women are standing up for their children’s future.”

Earlier in the day, von der Leyen visited CFB Kingston alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where the pair met with Canadian Armed Forces personnel who have deployed to Poland to help Ukrainian refugees.

The European Commission head is in Canada on a visit meant to promote transatlantic ties. She is scheduled to meet with Gov. Gen Mary Simon on Wednesday morning.
