People in parts of Paris and Spain tried to find ways to cool off on Wednesday as a sweltering heat wave hit various European countries, with some cities seeing temperatures of close to 45 C or higher.
Meteo France forecaster François Jobard said the heat wave in France could last at least eight to 10 days.
In Spain, some took to the beach to cool off while animals at the zoo in Madrid were given popsicles, or in some cases, "fishsicles", to keep their temperatures normal.
The heat was also keeping wildfires going that had sparked in some countries, with more than 20 burning across Portugal and others raging in southwestern France.
