Elon Musk‘s brain-chip company Neuralink is hoping to start testing its coin-sized implants in humans within six months, Musk said at a company event at its California headquarters.

Neuralink’s brain computing interface (BCI) product consists of a tiny device and a wire lattice of electrodes that is meant to measure the electric signals in the brain and allow a person to control a piece of technology with their mind. The company uses a robot to surgically embed the device into the brain.

In an event held Wednesday evening, Neuralink co-founder Musk touted that the company has submitted documents to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and that he hopes Neuralink will be cleared to start its first human trial in the next six months.

"We've been working hard to be ready for our first human and obviously we want to be extremely careful and certain that it will work well before putting a device into a human,” Musk said at the event. “We think probably in about six months, we should be able to have our first Neuralink in a human."
