Elizabeth May, who led the Green Party of Canada from 2006 to 2019, was chosen to return as leader of the party once more on Saturday, after running on a promise to share the role with Jonathan Pedneault.

“I do think we need change. I absolutely hear the voices that want change, that want to see younger leadership, that want to see a different way the party goes forward,” May acknowledged in her victory speech.

“I think we can all be inspired by what just happened in the November midterms in the United States - because guess who turned out to vote? The people who were supposed to give it a miss: the youth, the women, the young women.”

Party members have been casting ballots for a new leader over the past week, with six names on the ranked ballot and four of the candidates having intended to implement a co-leadership model that would have seen them sharing the role with another of the contenders. May will succeed Annamie Paul as party leader.
