A 50-year-old extreme athlete emerged into daylight on Friday from a 500-day challenge living in a 70-metre-deep cave outside Granada, Spain with minimal contact outside.
Elite mountaineer Beatriz Flamini told reporters that time had flown by since she first entered the cave in Nov. 2021 and that she celebrated two birthdays underground by herself while focusing on retaining "coherence," eating well and relishing the silence.
"On day 65 I stopped counting and lost perception of time," she said. "I didn't want to come out."
Flamini's support team said she broke a world record for the longest time spent in a cave in an experiment monitored by scientists studying the human mind and circadian rhythms.
