Discussion on the current political and economic scenario: NA passes budget to secure crucial IMF funding

The budget for the new fiscal year sailed through the National Assembly (NA) on Sunday, a day after the government made several changes, including fiscal tightening measures, dictated by the Internat­ional Monetary Fund (IMF) in a last-ditch effort to secure critical funding.

The revised budget aims for an additional Rs215 billion in tax revenue alongside a cutback of Rs85 billion in public spending for the upcoming fiscal year. However, this does not affect the federal development budget or the salaries and pensions of government personnel.

Election Act amended to restrict disqualification to 5 years

The National Assembly on Sunday approved the Election Amendment Bill 2023 restraining the period of disqualification of a parliament to a maximum five years and removing bar from running for a public office again.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar tabled amendments bill and the House unanimously approved Section 57 of the Election Act 2017. Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf presented the bill for voting which was passed with a majority.

The amendment provided that the term of punishment for the crime where term is not specified in the Constitution, disqualification will not exceed five years.


Nawaz doesn't need permission to become PM again: Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Sunday Nawaz Sharif did not need permission to become prime minister again.

Talking to Dunya News, the senior PML-N leader said injustice was meted out to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
