A woman from the Philippines who came to Canada as a temporary foreign worker in 2010 has been handed a deportation order, along with her six-year-old daughter who was born in Canada.

Vangie Cayanan alleges her employers abused and harassed her, and when she took her concerns to HR, she says she was let go.

Cayanan became undocumented in 2015, the same year she had a baby girl. Her daughter has since been diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and she worries she won’t get the supports she needs if sent back to the Philippines.

While in Edmonton, Cayanan has become an advocate for undocumented migrants, bringing them care packages during the pandemic and fighting for their children born in Canada to receive health care.

Global’s Sarah Ryan has the family’s story.
