"Earth’s vital signs are failing”: UN chief warns as King Charles, Blinken and others address COP28

COP28 president Sultan al-Jaber pledged on Friday that he will work on making the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels “within reach.” The day before, Jaber said the United Arab Emirate’s (UAE) has decided to "proactively engage" with fossil fuel companies, and that many national oil companies had adopted net-zero targets for 2050.

Meanwhile, United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres warned that “Earth’s vital signs are failing,” urging fossil fuel company leaders to “lead the transition to renewables” and governments to “help industry make the right choice.

Britain's King Charles also said the world was seeing “alarming tipping points being reached" and that it was "dreadfully far off-track" in addressing climate change. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken cautioned that food insecurity will worsen with extreme weather events, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva said that it was time to address the “slow-motion pace” of the planet’s decarbonization efforts.

After a year of record-breaking temperatures, the pressure is on for this year's summit to accelerate action to limit climate change. The summit, which runs until Dec. 12, clinched an early victory on Thursday, with delegates adopting a new fund to help poor nations cope with costly climate disasters.
