In Pakistan, ballots from Thursday's election are still being counted in several regions. Early tallies indicate that independent candidates backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan are doing better than expected. Khan and his PTI party were banned from running, but candidates they support look set to win seats in the national parliament. The military-backed Pakistan Muslim League, led by Nawaz Sharif, was the early favorite to win. The government's decision to block mobile phone services on the day of the election has been criticized by human rights groups as disrupting a fair election and delaying results.
