The 15th-century prototype was used by University of Maryland students to design their Crimson Spin drone, which successfully took flight using da Vinci’s ‘aerial screw’ design.

The Renaissance genius’s 15th-century scribblings even shocked the students who undertook the project, with Maryland graduate Austin Prete admitting, ‘I was absolutely surprised it worked!’

Over 500 years later and the Italian polymath’s chopper sketches are still way over our heads…
