But the road towards success has been paved with setbacks.
However, in South Korea's capital, it appears that vision may have finally arrived.
Starting Tuesday, "robo-taxis" will ferry passengers between the Digital Media City rail station and nearby buildings, and they will be joined shortly by additional driverless cars and even a bus.
