There has been a dramatic drop in New Zealanders able to access specialist mental health and addiction services over the past five years, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission has revealed.

The commission’s Kua Tīmata Te Haerenga five-year monitoring report shows thousands fewer people are receiving specialist help, while more are turning to primary health providers. Significant staffing shortages and recruitment challenges have been identified as the main contributors to this decline.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission chief executive Karen Orsborn discusses the concerning findings and the urgent need for a workforce plan. Wellness advocate Tyson Smith said no one at any age can rely on the system.
