Mass testing will be carried out on tens of thousands of people in eight areas of England in an urgent bid to halt the spread of the new South African strain of coronavirus. The latest 24-hour government figures show a further 406 people have died with Covid, bringing the UK total to more than 106,000. There have been another 18,500 new cases in the UK. And another 319,000 people received their first dose of the Covid vaccine yesterday, bringing the total number of first dose vaccinations to more than 9 million.
Scientists say early data suggests the vaccines will still work against the South African variant, although they might be slightly less effective. We report from Woking in Surrey - one of the areas targeted for the surge in testing.
