The U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday announced charges against eight people it said were acting as operatives for the Chinese government, in connection with an illegal law enforcement operation called “Fox Hunt.”

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers said the operation was described by China as an anti-corruption campaign, but that the U.S. believes it was instead a plot to target political opponents and critics.

Demers said China used intimidation and other tactics to attempt to force the victim in the case, whom the FBI are calling “John Doe,” to return to China, where they would be subject to an “illegitimate trial.”

U.S. officials arrested five of the suspects in operations carried out in New York, New Jersey and California. The other three defendants are believed to be in China.
