Attorney Ben Crump and family members of George Floyd held a press conference Monday in Minneapolis as the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin was expected to begin.

Crump said the trial will be a referendum on “how far America has come in its quest for equality and justice for all.”

He rebuked the claim that the trial will be a difficult case, saying if Floyd was a White American citizen who suffered a “painful torturous death” no one would claim the case is hard.

He also called for Chavin to be held criminally liable for the death of George Floyd, even after the city of Minneapolis agreed to settle the civil suit with a $27 million settlement to Floyd’s family.

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. after the officer knelt on his neck for an extended period during an arrest.
