After 52 years on the Danish throne, Queen Margrethe II signed a historic abdication on Sunday, making her son, Crown Prince Frederik X, the new King of Denmark.

After the handover took place at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, King Frederik was publicly proclaimed the country's next monarch by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Before being joined by his wife, the new Queen Mary, and four children, Frederik made a speech to spectators of the historic public ceremony.

“Today the throne is passed on. My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow,” he said, before acknowledging his mother’s service, adding that she “will be remembered forever as an extraordinary regent.”

Crowned in 1972, serving for more than five decades, the beloved Queen Margrethe announced her intent to abdicate in her annual New Year’s Eve speech during a live television broadcast — shocking much of the nation.
