On Wednesday, World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme executive director Michael Ryan said that despite the thousands of monkeypox cases reported in Africa annually, he didn't hear the "same level of concern" over the last decade now that it has spread to Europe.
WHO infectious disease epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove also said that due to a lack of surveillance in some countries, the mortality rate for monkeypox is unclear.
The WHO is requesting countries increase their surveillance of these cases, and Van Kerkhove added there's "a lot" that could be done to better understand the illness.
