Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Saturday that a deal has been secured for Canadians to leave the West Bank after earlier confirming that a plan to evacuate Canadians from Gaza ahead of an expected Israeli ground offensive against Hamas was cancelled due to violence at the Egyptian border.
On Friday, Israel gave the population of the northern half of the Gaza strip— about one million people—until Saturday morning to move south. It announced overnight that it would guarantee the safety of Palestinians fleeing the area on two main roads until 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EST).
Joly said a deal had been reached with Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan to have Canadians evacuated from the West Bank by bus. Roughly 355 Canadians are in that area, according to Global Affairs Canada.
Egyptian officials had said the southern Rafah crossing where its border meets Gaza would open later Saturday for the first time in days to allow foreigners out, but Joly confirmed that plan had been cancelled due to violence at the border. She said the government is working to secure safe passage for 160 Canadians and their relatives from Gaza.
