Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev said Wednesday he was happy to be able to still compete in the U.S. Open after it was announced players from Belarus and Russia would be able to play as neutrals this year.
"It would be really disappointing if I would not be able to defend my title at the U.S. Open," he told reporters in Halle, Germany.
As a Russian, Medvedev was banned from competing at Wimbledon this year after the All England Lawn Tennis Club barred players from Russia and Belarus from competing as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The world number one player currently, Medvedev will be defending his maiden Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open after beating Novak Djokovic in the final last year to deny the Serb a calendar year Grand Slam.
