Sumo wrestlers took part in an unexpected competition on Sunday at Tokyo’s Sensō-ji Temple, as they competed to be the first to make a baby cry.

The Sumo wrestlers, or Rikishi, faced off with babies in hand, as they competed to make the child in their opponents' arms cry first.

Organizers even donned colourful masks representing foxes and demons in an effort to elicit a whimper from an infant.

The traditional “crying sumo” event started in 1991 as a means to wish for the health and well-being of the children. About 100 babies took part in the event this year.
