COVID-19: US imposes travel ban from 8 African countries over Omicron variant

The United States will bar entry to most travelers from eight southern African countries starting on Monday, after a potentially more-contagious new COVID-19 variant was identified in South Africa.

No cases of Omicron were identified in the U.S. to date, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday, but as Jennifer Johnson explains, the country is grappling with its own rising COVID-19 caseloads.

Meanwhile, the U.K., Germany, Italy and the Netherlands have all confirmed cases of the Omicron variant. Now, many governments, including Canada, are restricting travel from several southern African nations. Mike Le Couteur has more.
