The 2022 World Junior Hockey Tournament was cancelled Wednesday after multiple COVID-19 cases were found within the teams.

International Ice Hockey Federation President (IIHF) President Luc Tardif, Hockey Canada Chief Executive Officer Tom Renney, Hockey Canada President and Chief Operating Officer Sam Smith and IIHF Senior Vice-President Petr Briza held a news conference Wednesday to discuss the cancellation.

"We had one crisis meeting and two crisis meetings waiting for all the tests, the result of the tests and today we had to cancel three games out of four. And we saw that it was impossible to continue this competition in a fair way," Tardif said.

Tardif said they will be meeting to discuss re-doing the tournament in the summer following the completion of the World Hockey Championships in May.

The tournament that draws fans from around the world was set to wrap up on Jan. 5, 2022.
