Incoming New York City mayor Eric Adams on Thursday presented a working approach to tackling the rising COVID-19 rates in the city.

At a news conference at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Adams again reiterated his pledge not to close down the city again, as happened during the peak of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020.

"We can't shut down our city again. We can't allow the city to go further into economic despair. And I'm going to put in place a comprehensive plan that we're rolling out today," said Adams, who takes over from Mayor Bill de Blasio on midnight, January 1, 2022.

"The day has come when we must learn to be smarter, live with COVID and ensure that we protect everyday New Yorkers, and that is what I'm going to do," added Adams.

U.S. health experts on Thursday urged Americans to prepare for severe disruptions in coming weeks as the rising wave of COVID-19 cases fueled by the Omicron variant threatens hospitals, schools and other sectors essential to daily life.

The warning comes amid record COVID-19 cases throughout the U.S., and just as while federal officials are issuing more travel warnings and reportedly preparing to authorize booster shots for 12 to 15-year-olds next week.
