World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday that he expected the UN health agency would be able to lift the emergency status of COVID-19 sometime this year, though was unable to specify when, adding the committee that would make the decision meets again in May where they would likely deliberate on the decision.
The agency has considered COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern for more than three years.
Both the director-general and WHO Emergencies Programme technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove spoke about the origins of the virus, saying all hypotheses were still on the table and they continued to push China for more information. Kerkhove said the WHO was currently working with scientists to find out more about the earliest cases from 2019 such as the whereabouts of those first infected.
