Canadian health officials provided an update on Wednesday on COVID-19 and other health concerns.

Dr. Mona Nemer, chief science advisor of Canada, released recommendations to the federal government on post-COVID conduction (PCC), also known as long-COVID.

Nemer said the panel, made up of a group of doctors advising the government on long-COVID, concluded it’s evident that COVID-19 is capable of becoming a chronic illness, with symptoms ranging from muscle pain, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue to brain fog, and even heart palpitations.

Findings also showed women are twice as likely as men to contract long-COVID and that it can also accelerate the onset of other chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

The panel spoke with long-COVID patients who reported feeling trapped in their own bodies, being treated with disbelief at their workplaces and having difficulty accessing health care and social support. Most have lost their jobs.

Estimates from the U.S. suggest that 10 million people with long-COVID could carry the economic cost of $3.7 trillion a year when taking into account the lost quality of life, lost earnings, and spending on medical care.
